Entering the Second Century (1996-2016)
Chapter 12 chronicles the Iron Workers Union as it entered its second century of service. The period began with the celebration of the union’s 100th anniversary and continued through years of significant change, including new leadership, advanced training programs, market-recovery initiatives, and an increasing focus on professionalism and accountability. The union embraced modernization while remaining grounded in the traditions established by generations of Ironworkers before them.
The defining event of this era was September 11, 2001. In the aftermath of the attacks, Ironworkers immediately answered the call to assist in rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero. Their courage and commitment during one of America’s darkest moments reflected the values that have always defined the trade: service, brotherhood, sacrifice, and skill. The years that followed saw the creation of IMPACT, expanded apprenticeship programs, instructor certifications, and the Standards of Excellence initiative, all designed to strengthen the future of the industry.
As new challenges emerged, including economic recessions, right-to-work legislation, and changing construction markets, Ironworkers continued to lead through innovation and solidarity. From One World Trade Center and major bridge projects to advanced safety and training initiatives, the union demonstrated that its greatest strength has always been its people. Chapter 12 celebrates a modern Iron Workers Union that honors its past while preparing the next generation for the opportunities ahead.
